A PDF without page numbers is difficult to navigate and impossible to reference in a meeting or a review conversation. When someone says "see the diagram on the third page" in a 40-page document that has no numbering, every reader has to count from the beginning. Legal documents, academic papers, reports, and manuals all require proper page numbering — and if your original document was assembled from multiple sources or exported without numbering, you need to add numbers without going back to the source. Adding page numbers to a PDF after the fact gives you complete control over position, style, and formatting — often more control than the original word processor offered. You are not limited to what your document template allowed. dokk.ai lets you place page numbers at any of six standard positions: bottom center, bottom left, bottom right, top center, top left, or top right. You choose the font family, font size, and text color. You can set the starting number — useful when this document is a chapter in a larger work that begins at page 47. Roman numerals (i, ii, iii or I, II, III) are available for front matter sections like table of contents or preface. You can also configure a number of pages to skip at the beginning — for example skipping the cover page and starting numbering from the second page. The page number is rendered as real text overlaid on each page, not as an image stamp. This means it is selectable, searchable, and accessible. The font and color choices match your document's visual style. For legal and formal documents, a common convention is 10pt serif font centered at the bottom, and the tool defaults reflect this. Page numbers work well alongside the Headers & Footers tool for more complex running headers that include the document title, chapter name, or date alongside the page number. For legal documents that require Bates numbering — page numbers that also include a document reference prefix — the Bates Numbering tool provides the format required by courts and discovery workflows.
