  1. 1Upload your PDF. dokk.ai displays any existing bookmarks in their current hierarchy alongside a page thumbnail panel.
  2. 2Add new bookmarks by clicking Add Bookmark, entering a title, and selecting the target page number. Repeat for each section.
  3. 3Organize your bookmarks by dragging them into the correct order and nesting sub-sections under parent chapters.
  4. 4Set the collapse or expand state for each parent node to control how the bookmark panel appears when readers first open the PDF.
  5. 5Click Save and download the updated PDF. Open it in any PDF reader to verify the bookmark panel displays your full navigation structure.

A long PDF without bookmarks is frustrating to navigate. Readers scroll endlessly through 80-page reports, jump awkwardly between chapters in technical manuals, or lose their place entirely in lengthy legal agreements. The bookmark panel in a PDF reader — that collapsible tree of section links in the left sidebar — is what transforms a flat document into a structured, navigable resource. But adding bookmarks typically requires Acrobat Pro or specialized PDF software. dokk.ai's bookmark editor lets you add, edit, rearrange, and delete PDF bookmarks directly in your browser. You can create a full hierarchical outline — top-level chapters with nested sub-sections — and link each bookmark to the exact page it refers to. The result is a PDF with a professional navigation structure that works in every PDF reader including Adobe Reader, Preview, Chrome, and embedded viewer apps. The editor supports nested bookmark trees up to five levels deep, custom bookmark titles, page number targeting, and collapse/expand state control for each node. Existing bookmarks are displayed in their full hierarchy and can be edited, reordered by drag-and-drop, or deleted individually. You can also import a simple plain-text bookmark structure to create a full outline without building it node-by-node in the UI. Bookmarks are stored in the PDF's document outline structure — a standard PDF feature defined in the PDF specification. They are not page annotations and do not alter the visual content of any page. Adding or editing bookmarks has no effect on text, images, page layout, or embedded fonts. Combine bookmarks with related dokk.ai tools for a complete document workflow: use Split by Bookmarks to divide a bookmarked PDF into individual chapter files, add Page Numbers to correlate visual page numbers with the bookmark targets, or Merge PDF to assemble separately prepared chapters before adding the final outline.
