Can I create bookmarks from a table of contents that already exists in the PDF?

Not automatically, but you can use the text import feature. Paste a plain-text outline using indentation to indicate hierarchy (for example, two spaces per level), and dokk.ai will generate the bookmark tree from it. You then assign page numbers to each entry.

What happens to existing bookmarks if I save changes?

The bookmark tree you see in the editor at the time you click Save becomes the final bookmark structure. Entries you deleted are gone; entries you added are included. The rest of the PDF is untouched.

Can I use bookmarks with the Split by Bookmarks feature?

Yes. Add bookmarks to define your chapter boundaries first, then use dokk.ai's Split by Bookmarks tool to automatically split the PDF at each top-level bookmark. This is the recommended workflow for producing individual chapter PDFs from a combined document.

Is there a limit on how many bookmarks I can add?

The PDF format has no practical bookmark limit. dokk.ai supports up to 500 bookmarks per file. If you need more, contact support for enterprise limits.

Can I set the initial view to show the bookmark panel when the PDF is opened?

Yes. There is an option to set the PDF's initial view preference to display the Bookmarks panel open by default. This is particularly useful for manuals and reports where you want readers to immediately see the navigation structure.
