Password-protected PDFs create friction at the worst moments. You set a password on a document months ago, and now you cannot remember it well enough to type it consistently. A colleague sends a protected file you need to edit or print, and the password they gave you is case-sensitive in a way that is hard to convey over the phone. Or you have a library of self-protected PDFs that you want to consolidate, and entering the password every time you open one is slowing you down. Removing PDF password protection is legal and appropriate when you own the document or have explicit authorization from the owner. The unlock tool does not bypass passwords — it removes the protection layer after you provide the correct password yourself. This is equivalent to opening the document in a PDF editor and saving it without a password, but faster and without requiring a desktop application. dokk.ai handles two types of PDF protection: the user password (also called the open password), which prevents the document from being opened at all, and the owner password (also called the permissions password), which restricts editing, printing, copying, or annotating. After providing the correct password and processing, the output file is a standard unprotected PDF that opens in any viewer without a password prompt. The tool processes the document server-side. Your password is used only for the decryption step and is never stored, logged, or retained. The decrypted file is available for download immediately and then deleted within one hour.
