How to Use

  1. 1Upload your PDF containing form fields or annotations to dokk.ai.
  2. 2Review the options to confirm all interactive element types should be flattened, or deselect types you want to keep.
  3. 3Click Flatten PDF. The tool merges all interactive elements into the static page content.
  4. 4Download the flattened PDF. All fields and annotations are now permanent and non-editable.
  5. 5Optionally upload the result to Encrypt PDF to add permission protection for additional security.

PDF forms and annotations are designed to be interactive — fields can be typed into, checkboxes can be toggled, comments can be edited. But that interactivity becomes a liability the moment you need to share a completed document that recipients should not be able to modify. A filled-in application form, a signed review document, or an annotated contract sent to a client should look exactly as completed — with no possibility of someone accidentally clearing a field, changing a checked box, or deleting a sticky note comment. Flattening a PDF merges interactive form fields, annotations, and comments into the static page content. After flattening, the PDF looks identical to the filled-in version, but the fields are no longer editable — they are rendered as ordinary text and graphics, indistinguishable visually from the rest of the document. There are no hidden layers, no interactive zones, and no risk of accidental modification. dokk.ai flattens all interactive elements in a single pass: text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown selections, digital signature fields, highlight annotations, sticky notes, freehand ink drawings, shape annotations, and stamps. The visual appearance of each element is preserved exactly — the font, color, and positioning of filled text; the check mark in a checked box; the highlight color over text — all become part of the permanent page content. Flattening is commonly required before archiving documents in PDF/A format, which prohibits interactive elements. It is also a required step before printing to ensure form content prints correctly on all printers, since some older PDF renderers do not process form fields consistently. Legal and compliance workflows often require flattened PDFs to prevent any possibility of content alteration after the review cycle closes. For documents that should also be protected from further editing after flattening, the Encrypt PDF tool can add a permissions password that prevents editing even in advanced PDF editors. For documents where sensitive text needs to be removed before flattening and sharing, run the Redact tool first. If the document contains annotations that you want to review before flattening, the Remove Annotations tool lets you selectively remove specific annotation types while keeping others.
